Notes on Meryl

a. Meryl has brown hair and very pale skin. Meryl looks to be in her mid 30’s. Meryl is an artist and card illustrator. Cards being greeting and welcoming cards assorted.

b. Meryl is returning home as she has attended her father’s funeral, shortly after he had passed away from a heart attack. She is returning by train from her childhood home.

c. The images in Meryl’s mind in the opening scene are of death. Scenes such as having a train derailed on top of her, being hit by a car and being choked by a stranger. This imagery clearly suggests she has death on her mind.

d. Meryl’s significance of painting the sharks in her chosen colour would be they are very dark and share no matter of light at all. They are a symbol of death somewhat and painting them black highlights this.

e. ‘I’m fine, I’m just being stupid. I’m sick of this stupid job, not having any money. I don’t own my own a yacht and....my sister ate all the smoked salmon sandwiches at the funeral’. This speech further strengthens Meryl’s character. As she is able to ‘Look Both Ways’, this portrays her character as simple. It shows she is able to make things out of life fun even when they are at their worst, which would suggest she has a strong character. To get through the tough times she is able to see some light. This makes her not so likeable as her character can become annoying in her swings of view on life, yet still maintains the simplicity as before.
